FOSSIL ISLAND ... The simplistic and enticing manner in which this game approaches the art of mathematics for children ages 6 and up is impressive. I was very much enthralled with what this game has to offer and all I can say is hats off to its author! Bonnie Hemstad, of White Sands Games truly shows her realm of love and experience in the realm of mathematics through her expressions shown within the makings of Fossil Island®. The fun advances quickly as you throw in the challenges that accompany the dino-dare cards. Children will be striving to compete in a fun atmosphere where the competition leads only to more fun and learned skills. Designed with children ages 6 and up in mind, but because of the format the game is played in, the entire family would have fun playing together around the table. The quality of the game is high - it is full of color and is appealing to the eyes. Children will love this as they mix it in with other dinosaur themed activities and will also enjoy the basis of dinosaurs in the math setting that is at times very discouraging to younger children, until they get the hang of it ... somehow when mixing favorite character types and a fun game - this lowers the level of fear and anxiety. Easy rules to read, learn and follow. This is one you will not have to wonder where the quality is, as it is evident in every turn they take. We give this game a 100% thumbs up! and look for it to work its way into the homes and hearts of many. - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! A game will take them about 30-50 minutes and every minute will be enjoyed! Then, once they are all finished - you can encourage them by showing them all they learned! Just don't let them know they are learning before they start - that spoils the fun (smile). This is one you will be so glad you purchased. |

BY Lexis, a Home school Mom/Teacher:
My boys loved this game. They are ages 5 & 8. I helped them through the first time, to explain how it worked and they were able to play it successfully after that with no problems. I liked how it brings simple math facts to the table without making a child feel pressured in a learning setting. Children learn better when they are enjoying the activity and this was a big help in calming my 8 yr olds fears in math. I would recommend this game for anyone with a child learning basic math concepts especially if they struggle or are intimidated by math itself. It is a lot of fun for them and all boys love dinosaurs. We mix it in with our prehistoric themes and unit studies as well.
My daughter found Fossil Island® to be of great interest and fun. She immediately wanted to play again.
Father of 10-year-old Hannah
Fossil Island® is a great family game that offers a solid foundation in math. The format is easily understood by the youngest of players, yet adapts to meet the needs of older children. I would highly recommend Fossil Island® as an educational tool in the home and the classroom.
Mother of 7-year-old Sam
I've tried other educational games with my boys before, but nothing held their interest. I believe they thought the games were too much like school work. Fossil Island® was different. They both had so much fun playing the game they didn't notice they were actually practicing math skills. I couldn't get them to stop playing Fossil Island long enough to take their night-time bath. As a parent of 3 kids, this is exactly what I'm looking for.
Mother of 6-year-old Christopher & 4-year-old Jacob
Congratulations, Bonnie, on completing a wonderfully creative adventure benefiting young children. The theme and pictures using dinosaurs are nicely woven throughout your new game, adding excitement and interest as important skills are learned. I'm so proud of your accomplishment and pleased that you continue to create interesting ways for children to master the facts that we know are crucial to the development of a solid knowledge foundation. It's not just second graders at Baxter Elementary School that can now benefit from your creativity and resourcefulness, you've opened the opportunity by having your game marketed in several stores. I wish you the very best as you continue to explore new ways to help children learn.

Teachers’ Evaluation Comments......
This game is creative and interesting. The best part is that it can be used with students of varying math skills at the same time of play. The dinosaur game is inviting for students. The notion that the game can be played for different skills enables differentiation among students. My students and I loved this game. I was surprised that my 6th graders enjoyed it so much. I can’t think of any thing that would improve this product because I feel that its great because different students can play together and not feel like they don‘t get it. I feel that this product has everything. I can’t think of anything that would make it better. I like games like this in my Centers because students can use them by themselves and don’t need teacher interaction. There is nothing you have to do to get it ready, it’s already to go. I like to be able to have games like this one for students to play but also to learn from. Students learned to practice a variety of math skills in a fun and innovative way. Kids learn when they can “play”. They learned how to be supportive of one another. Whenever one student had trouble the others in the group gave them hints to help them be successful.
I would recommend this game because I live inviting games for students. I like this one a lot because it has many skills that can be reinforced, not just one skill.
